See that's what I was talking about... every preference says something about you...

I can assume @Jaden you're more worldly... and appreciate the specific selections and unique flavors...

Okay I have to confess to you all that, another reason for wich I made this thread is because I finally could catch up with Master Chef's second edition here... :p

So I'm going to watch another episode with my "merienda..." couldn't find a translation, but is like a brunch before dinner...

Catch you guys later I'm hungry... :D

Damn you! Did 3 years at Misawa Air Base, Amori Prefecture, Japan. Later spent time at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa and a stint in Camp Humphrey South Korea.

You just reminded me why I hated leaving the Corps. I had a chance to sample food all over the world, but nowhere did I have the true enjoyment of eating like I did in the South Pacific.

I'll take Cajun and Creole cooking any day of the week, but Japan had the best presentation and the best atmosphere and traditions.

Nowhere else in the world have I seen so many plastic food displays.

Just have the server follow up and point ... none of those "um, what's this say" moments.

You guys would call it Milk jam... the legend says that a maid from colonial times got distracted attending to an emergency and left the sugared milk in the stove... when she came back found this brown cream instead and shared with her Lord the curious happy accident...

@ShadowaceAz uhhh but I hate when they go full multicolor... :s

Düsseldorf, a city nearby, has the 3rd largest Japanese population in Europe. So it is possible to get Japanese food over there. They also have a Japanese bakery... and bookstores and whatnot, all kinds of things Japanese living in a foreign country might want to buy. :)

And unlike the Chinese food we can get here, it's not that "westernized".

That's very important... "westernized" good word... word of the day...

Nothing wrong with "westernizing" food to make it more acceptable for the masses - Chinese food is very well known for that and it has worked very well for them.

It's the same with pizza - most pizza in Germany is "Germanized". We had a "real" Italian pizza baker close by (from one region... can't remember which one but pizza isn't the same all over Italy - or so I was told).

Shop closed down because people didn't eat there that often. A shame because the pizza was awesome. But it was too different from the pizza most Germans are used to. "German" pizza is has a thicker crust, is often softer, has more toppings and more cheese on top. I liked the thinner and crunchier pizza with less toppings... oh well... also like the "German pizza". (Can't stand some of the German pasta that is sold, though... it's often not "al dente" but soft... yuck!)

Spent a good few nights and days in Düsseldorf with dear friends that live nearby. Aside from getting split off from the group, and not having a cell phone, it was an amazing time. What's that drink (a beer if I recall), dark, wonderful, and best of all they say when you buy it "your glass will never be empty"?

Also sure as Capibara's shit, they came by with a new one if you ever got near a ¾ empty!

You know the dock area with the tower wall that shows all the times water rose to a certain level? Well, I told my friends I was going to go get some pictures. It was also during Japan Day Düsseldorf 2008, so you know the crowd. Anyway, I got done with photos of the wall and some character costumes and returned to where my mates had been. They were nowhere to be found. That's when I realized I'd left the paper with his address and phone numbers at his house in Wassenberg!!

After a moments panic, because all I could remember was we had a 60km car ride, I decided to start checking the closest bars! Sure enough, found them within 30 minutes at the second pub I checked. Haha His wife then used a Sharpie and wrote their contact info on my back!! 😂

For anyone interested in Japan Day, here is a video they posted for the May 2018 celebration

Maybe Alt? That's the beer I know they drink in Düsseldorf (I don't drink any beer at all so I wouldn't even know if it was dark or not :D ). There's a similar custom in Cologne with Kölsch, though - full glasses all the way, can't let them go "dry".

And many foreigners (even just people from different cities) are amused about the small glasses we have in Cologne - until they have ever been in a traditional "Kölsch Brauhaus" and had the experience of hardly being able to finish one glass before being handed another. :D

That's so cool about Japan Day - we have been very, very close to each other then in 2008 because I have been visiting Japan Day, too, in 2008. :) Haven't been there for a long time, too crowded for my liking. But loved it back then.

Contact info on your back... :joy: Glad you've found them - good thinking. ;) But it's really funny how small the world is sometimes, isn't it?
