Do you need to have the slack app for this? I don't have any space left on my phone for another chat app.
There's also a Slack app for computer, and you can log in using a browser as well (works on mobile, too, if you request the desktop site - otherwise will want to direct you to the app).

Yes slack is a requirement for participation. The team captains will need to be able to contact you and really it's an interactive competition. What makes it so much fun because of the interaction between the teams and the other players.
