Reaching Higher Challenge Levels

I wonder if someone can guide me in the right direction.
My average toon level is 20, I have unlocked every hero also.
Highest is 1 pink star.
I have managed to reached difficulty 29 /1000+ stars in the past.
Typically I play with a mix of melee and gunners with a leaning towards melee, SR and 2 bruisers/ Michonne, SR and RGG perhaps / Sasha, bruiser, bruiser / Sasha, Assault, Bruiser etc.
I am at a loss, as I can not comfortably break past difficulty 27, what would be ideal at this differential (+7 level difference), for example hero and toon team combos, traits to look out for, preferred weapons etc.

Mavericks is the best, but there are many others that are great. Just check the leaderboards.
I’ve done bruiser, bruiser( hockey stick), shooter
Assault, assault ( with pickles), shooter
Warrior(ax), scout, bruiser
scout( extra pokey stick thingy ), scout, bruiser
And scout, bruiser, ass
It’s luck and patience with a side of mediocre skills.
@Jenng thank you, I try. Half the premium weapons you mentioned, I don't have. I've got the spear (spring campaign) and spear gun (epic).
I know you use Rufus, can you recommend him to get further in later stages in the challenge with his health boost in mind and maybe 2 bruisers?

For your DR classes, if you can load them with dodge/hazard that will help. Each attack at +5 does 250% damage, dodge reduces this to normal damage, hazard reduces it further.
Razor is obviously extremely important for your melee classes so if you aren't using that then you'll be struggling.
The more damage and health, the better you will do. Ideally you want 2 max DR guys and a high damage dealing survivor in every mission.
After that it depends on the challenge set, watch videos from various players and you'll get a general idea of the teams they use and how they navigate the maps

I do love me some Rufus. I recommend him for all levels and all maps lol 😂 ( ok maybe not always, but I’m using him at rsl 30 for all the maps of this challenge. ) 2 bruisers I cannot do. I have 1, 8 star bruiser ( OG traits) and only 1 jacket upgraded for her so she’s my 1 and only bruiser I use but if you have 2 that are semi well equipped.......... I’d try it.
@Jenng the Rufus tactic worked as it goes. His health boost was enough to get me thru with a 3 star on +8 level diff. I used to not have much love for him before, but my view has improved somewhat lol. Bruisers are my favourite class besides scouts and shooters. I need to know how you have got so far without them!

I've not heard that mechanic with dodge before, in fact I thought it was basically useless at >+5 as it rarely triggers. Do you have more info on this?
At RSL40 a critical hit does about 7-8k damage with 80% damage reduction but when dodge triggers it does around 2.5-3k. Basically any time a walker critical hits you, there is a small chance for dodge to trigger and this will turn it into a normal hit. It won't say dodge above your head, instead it won't say critical hit and the damage will be noticably less than usual.
It might be that it is triggering but you don't notice. Or if you just have 15% dodge then it's not going to trigger often. What you want to try to do is get gold dodge on armour, lucky on the weapon and both on your survivor to really boost it's chances.

For instance, take Magnolia here. Dodge on survivor is 17%, armour is 15% so 32% chance. It is then boosted by two lots of lucky (22% + 15%) which increases the chances to about 43%. Hope that helps!

I think generally most would agree that for challenge you want 2 mega-defensive bruisers and a mega-offensive scout. I usually use Morgan, RG Glenn, and Scout Rick.
Play tons of outpost, buy class tokens, and build an 8* bruiser.
When I hit L26, I had tons of survivors at L17-L20 that I later upgraded gradually.
By minimizing Xp spending, I was able to focus on scavenging for supplies and upgrading buildings.
It is a grind, but I was very frustrated with outgrowing equipment constantly. Once you max out, everything is different; it was worth all the boring play for a couple of months to get there.
I'm gonna try to cut down the amount of toons I use and focus on building the best ones up.
